Bedlington Terrier History
The Bedlington Terrier (originally named the Rothbury Terrier) originated in an old mining town named Bedlington in Northumberland in North East England.
Originally bred for hunting, during the 1800’s, they became favourite pets for factory and mine workers who wanted to get rid of vermin (mainly rats) within their premises.
Later they became popular in the show ring. They were officially recognised by AKC in 1886.
Bedlington Terrier Characteristics
This small to medium sized dog has a thick double coat that can be seen in a variety of colours including blue, sandy, liver, blue and tan, sandy and tan, and liver and tan.
They are considered a hypoallergenic breed as they shed little or no hair. However, as a result clipping is imperative to avoid matting.
They are highly energetic, active dogs that need plenty of exercise daily as they can become bored and destructive. They can also be very vocal and need to scolded when their barking is excessive.
Bedlington Terrier Health Issues
Average lifespan is 13 – 18 years.
Common Illnesses include;
- Copper Toxicosis - Inherited autosomal recessive disease, characterized by accumulation of excess copper in the liver. This can lead to severe illness and even death. Dogs with this condition need a diet which is low in copper and high in zinc.
- Patella Luxation - Partial to full dislocation of one or both kneecaps.
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) – Progressive degeneration of the retina eventually causing blindness.
- Distachiasis – Extra eyelashes at the eyelid margins which can rub against the corneal surface.
- Renal Cortical Hypoplasia – Inadequately developed kidneys resulting in small misshapen kidneys at birth. Presents as of kidney failure
- Hypothyroidism – Underactive thyroid gland causing obesity, lethargy, ear infections and skin problems.
- Lacrimal Duct Atresia – Abnormally small tear ducts resulting in tear overflow and staining on the face.
