Border Collie History

Border Collies originated in Northumberland along the borders of Scotland and England in the 1700 – 1800’s. They are a descendant of dogs used by the Vikings to herd reindeer. Today they are most often used to herd sheep, as police or search and rescue dogs and in dog sports.

Border Collie Characteristics

Border Collies are rated as the most intelligent of all dogs. These medium sized dogs have a double coat that can be found in a variety of colours including black and white, tri-colour, red and white and black and grey.

Studies have shown that Border Collies are the most trainable and hard-working of all breeds. As a result they excel in agility, obedience and sheepdog trials.

Due to their high energy level and impressive intellect, both physical and mental stimulation is imperative to avoid behavioural problems. Failure to challenge and exercise these dogs regularly results in distressed and occasionally destructive dogs.

Border Collie Health Issues

Average lifespan is 12 – 15 years.

Common Illnesses include;

  • Hip Dysplasia – Genetic conditions that cause abnormal development of hip joints in young dogs. This can lead to early onset degenerative joint disease.

  • Epilepsy – Recurrent Seizures
  • Osteochondorosis Dissecans (OCD) – A condition resulting in abnormal cartilage or bone development. It will cause early onset osteoarthritis if not treated.
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) – – Degeneration of the retina resulting in progressive sight deterioration and eventual blindness.
  • Prone to athletic injuries; cruciate ligament ruptures, pulled muscles, lacerated or ripped toenails and footpads.
