Jack Russell Terrier History
Jack Russell Terriers are a small but courageous strain of working terrier.
Over the years breeders have focused on working ability versus a specific type. As a result the breed standard is very broad and not pure bred per se, as they have a broad genetic make-up.
Founded in Devonshire, England in the mid-to -late 1800’s by Reverend John Russell who bred terriers for fox hunting. Our modern day Jack Russell has changed very little from this because it has been preserved in England for hundreds of years.
Jack Russell Terrier Characteristics
These plucky, outgoing and friendly dogs can be fantastic companions and family pets but require daily exercise. Also, due to their strong willed nature it is imperative to begin obedience training at an early age.
They are short limbed, narrow chested dogs with a predominately white, double coat which can be smooth, rough or mixed.
Jack Russell Terrier Health Issues
These dogs are a healthy breed with an average lifespan of 13 - 16 years. Breeders have protected the gene pool however certain conditions can still arise. Eye problems are common and an examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist can identify them and should be carried out as early as possible.
Common Illnesses include;
- Lens Luxation – The lens in the eye becomes displaced causing pain and eventually blindness.
- Hereditary Cataracts – Clouding of the lens causing blurred vision to blindness.
- Patellar Luxation – Partial to full dislocation of one or both kneecaps.
- Legg Calves Perthes Disease – Altered blood supply to the head of the thigh bone causes disintegration of bone and lameness.
Rare Conditions;
- Myasthenia Gravis – Disease of the nervous system causing weakness in the hind limbs.
- Von Willebrand’s Disease – Blood clotting disorder.
- Congenital Deafness – Deafness present at birth.
